I’m a big fan of Spa Ritual nail polish for a number of reasons, so I was really excited when they reached out to me with a sample of their 2-step Flexible Color long lasting manicure system, Spa Ritual Gold. Like other similar systems, this uses a coat of color and a high shine topcoat for a gel-like, long-lasting finish. I don’t often wear my nail polish for more than a day, so I buckled down for the long haul and prepared my mind to leave my nails painted with this polish for multiple days!
The color provided to me was a bright, orange-leaning red called Last Tango as well as a bottle of the flexible topcoat. Much like gel polish, these bottles have a protective coating on the outside.
The handles are rubberized and have grip lines, just like their regular polish bottles (one of my favorite Spa Ritual features) and the brushes are wide with a score of bristles that make precise polishing very easy.
First off, Spa Ritual makes a number of claims about this polish:
- Using the system will double the wear of your manicure.
- Has an easy application and removal process
- Has Smudge Repairing technology to self-level and self-correct
- Has a high shine finish
Let’s see how those claims pay off! I’d never used any of the 2-step systems out there before, so I stuck with following the instructions precisely. To start with, I swiped each nail with a bit of alcohol to remove any dirt or oils.
While the instructions recommend two coats of polish, I found it necessary to apply 3 to get a fully opaque nail. The formula was really creamy and smooth, and reminded me a bit of a thin crelly. It went on easily and precisely without bleeding or pooling in my cuticle area. The brush on this really is very nice!
I applied one coat of the Spa Ritual Flexible Topcoat and was immediately impressed. It went on super smooth and was very glossy. These pictures were actually taken 24 hours after I first applied the polish.
I was immediately impressed with the glossiness! The topcoat added a really smooth finish and was actually really cool. I dinged my middle nail a bit, but you’d never know it because the topper leveled it right out again. My only complaint here was that it took a really long time to be fully dry, 2-3 hours. While the top was most definitely dry, the layers underneath were still dentable for a long time after I had finished. That being said, the topcoat really does a fine job of self-correcting, so as long as you aren’t planning to do anything crazy with your nails, the drying time is pretty manageable.
At the end of third day, I didn’t have any noticeable wear and I went ahead and applied another coat of the topcoat as recommended.
I ended up wearing the polish for six full days. On the sixth day, the polish was starting to show signs of wear at the tips, but no other chips, cracks or crazing was visible:
Removal was, indeed, very easy. No soaking required, just a bit of acetone.
Let’s take another look at the claims for this system:
- Using the system will double the wear of your manicure. ✓
- Has an easy application and removal process ✓
- Has Smudge Repairing technology to self-level and self-correct ✓
- Has a high shine finish ✓
Cleared with flying colors. While I still love changing my nail polish around too much to want to use a system like this on a regular basis, I think this is a great solution for someone who only wants to do their nails every 6-7 days, or for when you need your polish to really last, such as business trips or vacations. It is very easy to use and while I found it to be slow-drying overall, the flexible topcoat technology takes some of the dent/smudge worry out of the equation with the self-leveling formula.
