#mommysmanimonday – Kid’s Party Prompt

This is a mani from exactly two weeks ago (I feel like a huge slacker when I say that!). Our #mommysmondaymani prompt two weeks ago was to do a mani to match the theme of one of your kiddos birthday parties. My daughter is only 5, and we’ve only had one themed party, so my choice was super easy!

Luckily, it was from my kiddos 2nd birthday, which means I picked that theme in the first place. I also designed the invitations and was able to pull the graphic up for easy reference. The theme was owl’s in a brown, pink, blue, green color scheme. Doesn’t that just sound like me? Here is a pic of the invitation (the art work is something I designed years ago when I was still doing web design work):

2nd Birthday theme: Owls!
2nd Birthday theme: Owls!

So, really, this was right up my alley, theme-wise, there was only problem: My nails were still completely nubby. I pushed ahead anyway, absolutely determined to at least include similar elements (like that owl!)

I started off with two coats of Barielle – Nostalgia, a wonderfully dark chocolate color. Once that was dried, I started in on my owl. I generally like my nail art to be really precise and this would have been a lot better if I had some painters tape and could cut out and outline silhouette. C’est la vie! Instead, my little owl is free-handed and looks a little blobtacular.

I painted on a body-ish shape using Butter London – Jaded Jack and added its’ belly with Sinful Colors – Pink Poppys.  I painted on the beak with a random orange polish and then used a dotting tool with some white and black polish to create the eyes. I added some lighter pink dots to the belly so it didn’t look so plain.

After the owl was safely out of the way, I did the pink blossoms and leaves on my middle finger. These were pretty straight-forward! I used a thin striping brush to paint on the branches and leaves, then used a large dotting tool to do the flowers, simply adding dots in a circular fashion and dotting the middle of each one with white and yellow.

On my pointer and pinky figers, I did a simple dot pattern using the colors from the owl as well as turquoise.

  • Essie – Grow Stronger Base Coat
  • Barielle – Nostalgia
  • Butter London – Jaded Jack
  • Sinful Colors – Pink Poppys
  • Sinful Shine – Sailor’s Delight
  • Finger Paints – Bizerk Turq
  • Seche Vite – Dry Fast Top Coat

The dots are actually my favorite part of this mani! I just wasn’t super satisfied with my blobby little owl, but I do like the overall feel of the mani. I love this kind of cute look for nails!
